Local SEO checklist for small businesses: start with the customer’s job
A practical local SEO checklist covering service pages, genuine coverage areas, Google Business Profile information, enquiries and measurement.

1. Choose the services and customers you want to reach
Write down the work you want more of and the places you actually serve. Be specific enough to make a content decision: a general service label may hide several different customer needs. Start with a small set of important services rather than trying to write about every search phrase in a keyword tool.
For example, a cleaning business might distinguish recurring office cleaning from an end-of-lease clean. An accountant might separate business tax work from bookkeeping. A customer reading the page should be able to recognise their situation and understand the next step. These examples describe content planning, not extra services every business should add.
2. Give each important service a useful page
Open the page on a phone and ask whether a new customer can tell what the service includes, who it suits, where it is available and how to enquire. Add business-specific information you can stand behind: the process, what a customer needs to prepare, examples you have permission to publish and the limits of the service.
A guide can answer a supporting question in more depth, then link to the service page. Keep their jobs distinct. A guide about preparing for a website rebuild helps a reader plan; the service page explains the work you offer and how to buy it. Link them where that connection is useful instead of repeating the whole sales page in every article.
3. Describe real coverage rather than copying suburb pages
Location information should help someone decide whether you can serve them. If you write a dedicated location page, give it a reason to exist: different availability, relevant work examples, practical service information or another genuine distinction. Swapping a suburb name in an otherwise identical page gives the customer little extra information.
Keep your business address and service-area arrangements accurate on Google Business Profile. A business visiting customers from a home base is different from a staffed premises customers can visit. Google’s guidance explains which arrangement fits and when the address should be hidden. Do not invent an office to imply local presence.
4. Check the profile and contact journey together
For an eligible Google Business Profile, check that the business information, website link, phone number and hours are current. Then follow the website link as a customer. A clear profile does not fix a broken form, an unreadable mobile page or a service that is impossible to find.
Send a clearly labelled test enquiry and confirm receipt in the intended inbox. Check telephone and email links on a phone. If an enquiry asks for information customers may not have, review whether each field is needed at that stage. A simple path to a useful conversation is more valuable than collecting a long list of details nobody uses.
- Can a customer find the service from the homepage?
- Do the website and profile show consistent contact details?
- Does the form reach the correct inbox?
- Can someone use the page and contact options on a phone?
- Find
Accurate profile information and useful pages help customers assess relevance.
- Understand
Describe the service, real coverage and what happens next.
- Contact
Test phone links and form delivery on a mobile device.
- Follow up
Confirm the enquiry reached the business and record its outcome.
These are customer journey checks, not a guaranteed Google ranking sequence.
5. Review the pages that matter and choose the next improvement
Use Search Console to review relevant service queries and pages over time. Keep a note of meaningful content changes and launch dates so you have context for the reports. A single manual search is not a complete ranking report: location and the mix of searches affect what you see.
Compare search activity with enquiries you can verify, and keep actual quotes and won jobs separate. Choose the next content update based on a real gap, such as a repeated question customers ask before booking. Google recommends useful, organised content written for people; there is no requirement to fill a page to an arbitrary word count.
If you want help doing the work, my local SEO service connects service content, eligible profile work and enquiry measurement. Agree on the scope and priorities first. Rankings and enquiry volumes cannot be guaranteed, and local SEO does not replace the business’s responsibility to respond to the enquiries it receives.
